Greece has announced plans to upgrade its existing fleet of fighter jets as well as acquire new U.S.-built fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II aircraft in a move that might give its military a technological edge over neighbouring Turkey.

In earlier articles we have repeatedly emphasized the need to modernize all of the F-16s that the Hellenic Air Force maintains. The reasons are many and have been extensively analyzed. To a degree of "overkill" one could say ... A necessary "evil" nonetheless (that of repeated reporting and analysis ...) for the very simple reason that there is no more time. The events themselves are "deafening", and so is Turkey!

Negotiations between the Greek and US side on the purchase of an F-35s squadron will soon begin, Defence Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos said on Thursday in a statement to SKAI TV.
