Top court issues temporary freezing order for wind farm project in Evia

The summer section of the Council of State issued on Wednesday temporary orders blocking a project by Enel Green Power Hellas to construct a cluster of eight wind farms and 73 wind turbines in the area of Kafireas, on the southern part of Greece's Evia island, in the municipality of Karistos.

"We order that no further work that seeks to carry out the projects in question be done, until a decision is reached on the request to suspend the contested decisions," the ruling states.
The case against the ministry of environment and 27 of its decisions to start the investment was brought before the court by a local environmental group, the Association for the Protection of the Environment in South Karistia, and three local residents. According to their claims, the eight wind farms will be built in a forested area included in the Natura 2000 ecological network, designated as a site of communal importance and a special protection area for avifauna.
The ministry has approved the company's environmental conditions for the wind farms in question, as well as the environmental conditions for their construction and operation.
The eight wind parks would install 73 wind turbines to produce 167.9 MW, the construction of a 20MW underground grid and the construction of three power stations of 20/150 KV at the locations of Amygdalea, Antia and Platanistos in Karistos.
