Tsipras declares national mourning after deadly floods, promises support measures

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras spoke of a difficult time for Greece, in his address concerning the flood and declared national mourning for the tragedy.

"We are currently mourning 14 people and the wish of all of us is for the number not to grow ," the prime minister said, while sending his condolences to the families of the victims.

"The declaration of national mourning for the great tragedy is the least we can do," the prime minister also said, who also announced the measures agreed upon ay yesterday's emergency meeting.

Operations to find and rescue those at risk will continue with unabated intensity while army camps and public spaces will be used to host the homeless tonight.

At the same time, Mr. Tsipras assured that "all the necessary measures are being taken to deal with extreme weather events across the country".

"There will be a thorough investigation so as that we may not relive what happened today," the prime minister also said, and also pledged support measures for households and businesses affected.

The goal, he said, is for the teams of experts to record the damage directly to heal the wounds as soon as possible.

He also thanked the men and women of the fire brigade for their work.
