Seal pup befriends strangers on Samos

A young seal has been appearing on the shores of Samos for the last two months and is being closely monitored by staff of the Archipelagos NGO. The young seal is healthy, but exhibits unusual behavior according to NGO scientists.

Instead of being afraid of people, it seems to be exhibiting very social behavior, something which is very dangerous, as humans are the seal's worst enemies. Archipelagos scientists have been trying to wean it away from humans, which is very difficult, as the young mammal likes to wander onto beaches and even yards. The positive thing is that the seal is healthy and eats well.

The Archipelagos organization notes that despite the dangers seals face because of human behavior, this is changing. A couple of farmers, for example, undertook to monitor the seal pup for around ten days, and report on its well being, despite being forced to scale a cliff to do so. Another family was briefed by their child that had taken an environmental awareness seminar and sensitized them to the seal pup's plight.  Archipelagos has promised to keep briefing the public on the seal pup's welfare!
