Amphipolis mosaic fully revealed
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Archaeologists have further excavated the beautiful mosaic discovered at the tomb in Amphipolis and revealed the figure of Persephone, confirming speculation that the scene depicted is the abduction of Persephone, Zeus daughter, by Hades.
Hermes the ‘soul guide’ with his winged sandals is leading the chariot which is ridden by the bearded Hades.
The young female figure in the scene is wearing a white robe and has raised her left arm.
Earlier there had been speculation that the mosaic might depict the deceased interred in the tomb although archaeologists always considered a more conventional depiction of Persephone’s abduction by the god of the underworld as more likely.
