UK Embassy Hosts Youth Event in Thessaloniki

As part of a series of debates on issues of contemporary relevance in Greece and Europe, and ahead of the Thessaloniki European Youth Capital City 2014, the British Embassy in Athens organised a highly successful public debate in Thessaloniki on 13 November.

Titled 'Your Country Needs You. Can young people change their country's future?' and moderated by the journalist Christina Tachiaou, this debate gathered young speakers and participants from diverse backgrounds. Two UK Young Ambassadors, Natalie Robinson and Sophie Rodgers, developed their thoughts on the importance of a strong youth voice in shaping politics. The Greek speakers, Ioannis Konstantinidis, Assistant Professor, International & European Studies, University of Macedonia and Yorgos Georgiadis, entrepreneur, stressed the meaning of youth participation in politics along with the challenges and obstacles nowadays.

A live discussion followed with members of the audience participating and voting for and against each approach. The British Ambassador commenting on the conclusions of the debate said: 'Dialogue is the heart of democratic process. It's about where the common good lies'.
