The refugee crisis is an issue of massive proportions, said Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in a statement to ERT3.
No country could manage this issue alone. The Battle of Greece in addressing the refugee crisis is multifaceted, he said. Tsipras stressed that the determination of the Greek side will not remain in the position of passive observer, but will claim an active role, as it has done, already taking initiatives.
In his statement, which is few days before the important EU-Turkey Summit, Sunday, on the refugee issue, Mr. Tsipras stressed that "Greece is givinng a multifaceted battle to cope with the refugee as a common concern of all European Countries and countries neighboring the outbreak of war. " He noted that "Greece is implementing its European obligations to create reception areas and identification of refugees", and went on to underline: "But while Europe should realize that Greece maintains EU borders." "Neither the fence nor the transfer of the problem from one country to another can intercept the flows caused by war and poverty."
"So we are determined," continued Mr. Tsipras' not to stay in the position of passive observer. Greece is claiming an active role in solving the problem and has already taken relevant initiatives. We are determined to fight the battle through Domestic and European humanitarian values. "
Mr. Tsipras said that "we have warned Europe that fences and closed borders can only lead to a dead end" and said that "the risk to Europe from the abolition of freedom of movement is much more serious and therefore imposes an effective management of the refugee problem. "
The Greek Prime Minister stated that the refugee crisis is a phenomenon of immense proportions that no country could manage alone and stressed that "Greece at Europe's borders is at this hour struggling to defend human values and solidarity."
"While around us we hear growing louder isolationist and xenophobic phenomena, the Greek people, despite the deep economic and social crisis they are undergoing are giving lessons of sensitivity and humanity."
