OECD SG Meets Premier

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras met with OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria at his office on Wednesday.

Mr. Gurria gave the premier the Organisation's last report on Greece, extolled Greece's efforts and praised him for his efforts since, as he said, Greece is the first country globally in restructuring reforms.

Later, the OECD secretary general met with foreign minister Evangelos Venizelos.

Following the meeting, he said that "there is life after debt" and noted that the Greek program is "the most impressive adjustment programe ever undertaken," underlining the spectacular improvement of the balance of payments, the fiscal situation and the primary surplus.

Mr. Gurria said that through his visit he wanted to assure Greece that the OECD recognizes that the country is working on "the most impressive fiscal adjustment programme ever undertaken" and that it has achieved "an impressive reversal in its balance of payments and its fiscal state, achieving a primary surplus and restoring its competitiveness, lost because of the imbalance between the ratio of wages and productivity."

Commenting on the OECD report, the foreign minister reiterated that Greece's debt is indeed sustainable and has potential to fall further.
