Tourism traffic to the Ionian Islands, which include favorites Corfu and Zakynthos, picked up pace in the first half of 2016, Vice Governor of Tourism and Promotion for the Ionian Islands Region, Spiros Galiatsatos, said during a press conference this week.
International flight arrivals to Corfu rose by 11.5 percent, to Aktion by 13.5 percent, to Kefalonia by 9.5 percent and to Zakynthos by 5.3 percent, placing the Ionian isles among the top destinations beside Crete, Mykonos and Santorini.
At the same time, road tourism from neighboring Balkan countries and Turkey is demonstrating an upward trend with accompanying increased spending.
“All the data suggests that we will have a positive season. This creates an obligation for local authorities, businesses and professionals to be even more alert so that our guests depart with the finest experience possible,” said Galiatsatos, and added that the figures fall within the forecasts for the first half of the year.
Regional authorities, meanwhile, are currently in talks with local tourism professionals towards the implementation of a far-reaching tourism promotion strategy.
