Former New Democracy transportation minister Mihalis Liapis was arrested after running a stop sign in the suburb of Agia Paraskevi.
The man that was at the helm of the transportation ministry during many of the changes in mass transport was found to have counterfeit license plates, no driver's license and the vehicle was uninsured.
Mr Liapis will face prosecutors at central Athens courts on Evelpidon Street, in handcuffs, at 18.00, today.
The man, who was once the director of the elder Karamanlis' political bureau, and his nephew, during his time in exile and afterward, was found to have tendered the vehicle's license plates into the tax bureau to avoid paying road tax on his expensive SUV.
