Savvas Xiros hospitalized out of jail

Savvas Xiros, serving life for five murders and terrorist acts with the 17 November group will be treated at ophthalmology clinic of the Larisa university hospital by decision of the Piraeus court.

The court opined that Xiros receive a thirty-day sentence suspension, as the condition of his health is constantly deteriorating, as his attorneys noted. The court rejected his request for treatment at a neurological clinic since he is suffering from multiple sclerosis, despite doctors and coroners testifying in favor of this demand. This was the fourth plea that Savvas Xiros had tendered.

The trial on Savvas Xiros' request, a purely judicial issue, became a bone of contention between main opposition SYRIZA and the government. In the ensuing verbiage both sides attempted to take issue with the justice and legal process, directly infringing on issues not within the realm of the legislative, or executive authorities.

SYRIZA's Rights Secretariat issued an announcement on the occasion of Xiros' request demanding that justice “deal with the issue with the requisite humanism.”
The announcement called Savvas Xiros a “special case” noting that “eleven years after his severe wounding, and multiple injuries sustained when he was hurt as well as later problems, like deafness, blindness, multiple sclerosis, and neurological problems, Savvas Xiros remains imprisoned.”

The announcement also mentioned a 2010 decision of the European Court of Human Rights that condemned Greece for imposing vindictive incarceration conditions for Savvas Xiros, ending with a condemnation of the vindictiveness of the Greek state, and a demand for humanism in dealing with the issue.

Lashing back, was government spokesperson Simos Kedikoglou who denounced the main opposition for attempting to release a terrorist, something which in the past they tried to do through their testimony at his trial.

An announcement from New Democracy attacked SYRIZA for sympathizing with terrorists, and refered to a recent article in (SYRIZA leaning) newspaper Avgi signed by “friends and comrades of Dimitris Koufodinas”

Savvas Xiros was wounded during a bombing attempt in Piraeus when the IED he was handling exploded in his hands. His injury and subsequent arrest led to the dismantling of the 17 November organization and the arrest of many members, including Dimitris koufodinas, the organization's operational chief.
