Who is Rachel Makri?
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Kozani representative Rachel Makri was born in Ptolemaida in 1973 and is a civil servant with the environment ministry.
She has been accused of getting her final position after political wrangling, after graduating from the Kavala Technical Institute and was placed in 2003 with public health system in Attica.
The position was not to her liking and she decided to seek a re-assignement to another post at the civil servant's social security fund TEADY, while under the PASOk government of 2010 she “moved” to the environment ministry.
From there she resigned in order to run for parliament under the banner of the Independent Greeks party.
The most controversial aspect of her recent behavior is the fact that she had her husband, an engineer with ERGAOSE (state railroad works) was transferred as an aide to the parliament office of another Independent Greeks Mps.
Ms Makri has also often hit the media through her comments, such as her support of the fired public broadcaster ERT employees, where she climbed the building's fence and also supported her colleague from SYRIZA, the vociferous Zoe Kostantopoulou. The fact that she quoted her 5 year old son, on television, as saying he wanted to burn down parliament did not go un-commented.
After her resignation from Independent Greeks, she has already been embroiled in social media “rows” with several deputies from various parties.
At this time, of a flagging, very slim governmental majority, her next political moves are being carefully watched.
