uake measuring 5.3 on Richter scale shakes eastern Crete

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Ricther scale shook the island of Crete at around 23:30 on Saturday night and was widely felt in the city of Iraklio and eastern parts of the island. Local inhabitants also reported that the quake had an unusually long duration.

According to the Geodynamic Institute in Athens, in an announcement on behalf of the National Seismological Network, the epicentre of the quake was in the sea 33 km west-southwest of Ierapetra at a depth of around 10 km, 63.7 km southwest of Iraklio and around 377 km south-southeast of Athens.
The main tremor was followed by an aftershock of 3.5 Richter at 23:46 from the same region.
According to the head of the fire brigade on Crete Yiannis Maragakis, there have been no reports of damage.
