The coast guard and the shipping ministry went into action immediately after the Salamina spill, the emergency plan came into effect 16 minutes after the incident and all available forces were mobilised, government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said in an interview with Real FM on Thursday.
The effort started from the very first moment, there was a direct mobilisation of all available containment means, an immediate request was also made to the international organisation for the protection of the marine environment and, as soon as this was possible, a vessel was used for the first time in Greek seas for dealing with such accidents and sealed the ship almost immediately, Tzanakopoulos explained.
As he added, the spill was a major accident whose management presented great difficulties.
