Fishing ban in the Argosaronikos Gulf extended to year's end

An extension to the ban on fishing in the Saronikos Gulf was announced by the Ministry of Rural Development, until the end of 2017.

The ban, enforced after the oil spill from α sunken tanker last summer, had expired, but was extended for another two months through a decision taken jointly by the Minister of Rural Development Vaggelis Apostolou and the representatives of the fishermen who work with trawlers.

According to the announcement, "the prohibition in the specific area of the Saronic Gulf is extended for two months, until the corresponding studies by competent authorities (HCMR) are completed".

Along with the HCMR, the Ministry  has undertaken a series of samples and analyses in mussels, in collaboration with the General State Laboratory and Demokritos Institute.

"To date, all results are negative, for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons while sampling and analyses will continue" was noted.
