Greek renouncing inheritance because of taxes

In past decades, most families in Greece were trying to acquire a property that would be handed down from one descendant to another, but they had no thought, then, about ENFIA (property tax) and overtaxation, and in no case would they contemplate a renunciation of heritage.

After the first years of the financial crisis, it seemed that the situation was changing and the balance leveled towards the tax side, with the result that the "for sale" property stickers and advertisements increased exponentially. Thus, when the real estate market fell abysmally, the moment came for Greeks to go to another level, that of the renouncing their inheritance.

According to provisional data, quoted by Kathimerini newspaper, heritage renunciations last year reached 130,000 when, in 2016, the official data of the Ministry of Justice spoke of 54,422 renunciations.
Indeed, comparing the figures of 2017 with those of 2013, the increase has reached 333%, as 29,199 heritage disclaimers were registered in 2013 and since then the rise has been steady.

The numbers are indicative:

In 2014, 41,388 renunciations were registered

In 2015 they reached 45,628

In 2016, 54,422 were recorded

In 2017 their number jumped to 130,000
