A careta - careta turtle, hurt by a hook, was identified with the help of professional fishermen and the activists of WWF Hellas, on the waters outside of Syros.
Ecologist volunteers returning from a mission to Gyaros when close to the Phoenix fishing retreat were summoned by assembled fishermen to rush. The young turtle had been injured by a hook in the oral cavity.
WWF rescuers immediately covered the wounded animal with a damp cloth and called for turtle shelter ARCHELON and veterinarians.
The animal was drugged and underwent surgery. With a incision in the palate, the hook was removed and, after 24 hours of antibiotics, the turtle was released into the sea.
Turtles are sea based reptiles, the land equivalent of which are tortoises.
