Sculptures by Chinese artist to decorate Thessaloniki port

Fifteen statues made by the Chinese artist Xu Hongfei will decorate Pier I of Thessaloniki port between December 17 and December 24, as part of Culture Week and a worldwide tour of the artist's sculpture exhibition, which will begin in Thessaloniki.

The initiative for organising Culture Week was undertaken by the Union of Chinese Traders in Greece. The artist, along with the mayor of Guangzhou city - the second largest city in the world with a population exceeding 26.5 million residents - will visit Thessaloniki during that period.

Xu Hongfei is the president of the sculpture academy in Guangzhou. He has exhibited his works, among others, in Australia, the United States, Italy, France, Germany, Turkey, Peru and Colombia, while the most representative element of his work is his exploration of the female figure.

The opening ceremony of Culture Week has been scheduled for December 18. Central Macedonia Regional Governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas and Mayor Yannis Boutaris will attend the event.

The aim is to present Thessaloniki and Guangzhou to the world, combining Chinese art and the unique charm of Greek civilization and enhancing communication and cooperation between the two cities.

In Thessaloniki, the Chinese community numbers 2,300 members.
