Slovenian painter Jurij Subic arrived in Athens on 5 December 1879 at the invitation of Heinrich Schliemann and architect Ernst Ziller in order to use his talent and ideas to decorate the Schliemann mansion, or "Iliou Melathron", in Athens.
Homer, Pindar, Lucian, Hesiod, and Goethe inspired Subic, whose art helped shape the character of the building, concluding his work in October 1880.
The Numismatic Museum, in Subic's honour, is inaugurating an exhibition of his work at 13:00 on Wednesday.
"The artist's work is characterised by a spirit of constant dialogue between the past and the present," said Culture Minister Myrsini Zorba.
The exhibition "Subic in the Land of Classical Greece" is organised by the National Gallery of Slovenia, the Numismatic Museum of Athens and the Embassy of Slovenia in Athens, on the occasion of Slovenian President Borut Pahor's visit to Athens.
The exhibition is held under the auspices of the Greek President of Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos and will be attended by Slovenian Culture Minister Dejan Presicek.
The exhibition will run until 14 January 2019.
