Tsipras in Marrakech to attend UN Conference on Global Compact for Migration

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will participate in the Intergovernmental Conference to adopt a Global Compact for Migration taking place in Marrakech, Morocco on Monday, under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly.

The prime minister will speak during the debate before the plenum of the conference, which is due to begin at 9:00, presenting Greece's positions on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.

On the sidelines of the Intergovernmental Conference, which will take place on December 10-11, Tsipras will have bilateral meetings with the President of the United Nations General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa and the Vice-President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Gilles Carbonnier.
Tsipras is accompanies by Minister for Migration Policy Dimitris Vitsas.

The main objective of the Compact is to improve the cooperation and management of the cross-border movement of people. However, it does not have binding legal force as it respects the principle of national sovereignty.
The Global Compact on Migration is the result of dialogue and consultation of 18 months between the member states on the basis of the New York Declaration, adopted unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2016.

It is the first UN global agreement on a common approach to international migration and it is considered a milestone in the history of global dialogue and international cooperation on migration.
