Deputy Foreign Minister meets with John Bolton at the White House

With his meeting in the White House with John Bolton, the national security advisor to President Donald Trump, the visit of Deputy Foreign Minister George Katrougalos to Washington was completed on Friday afternoon.

According to diplomatic sources, the meeting was "very meaningful" and exceeded its scheduled duration.

At the four-party meeting, the debate focused on regional developments and, in particular, on the ever-growing geopolitical importance of the eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans. In this light, Greece's leading role in promoting stability and security in the wider region was examined.

In addition, Turkey's role as well as the course of Greek-Turkish and US-Turkish relations were discussed extensively. Finally, the excellent level of bilateral co-operation that was sealed with the launch of the Strategic Dialogue was highlighted.

Earlier on Friday, the Deputy Foreign Minister was the main speaker in a closed roundtable with prominent academics and think tank executives at the American Enterprise Institute. The main focus of his intervention was the upgrading of Greece-US relations and the prospects opened by the start of the Strategic Dialogue.

He then developed the stabilizing role of Greek foreign policy, which, he said, promotes active synergies and collaborations in the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean. Indeed, it did not fail to make specific reference to the challenges facing these areas, stressing that Greece is actually supporting the Euro-Atlantic and European prospects of the Western Balkan countries, provided that the basic criteria are met.

The attendees showed particular interest in the key aspects of the Prespa Agreement, which both sides appreciated would have a positive impact on the region but also on the developments in Greek-Turkish relations. In particular, they welcomed the positive agenda of Greek foreign policy, giving special emphasis to the relations that our country has developed with Israel.

Prior to the American Enterprise Institute, a working breakfast was preceded by a working breakfast at the BCIU Business Council, with the participation of leading executives of American multinational companies from sectors such as energy and cutting edge aerospace. The Greek Deputy Minister has highlighted the comparative advantages our country offers as an investment destination.

Along the same line, the Presidents of Digital Policy and Economy, L. Kretsos and S. Giannakidis, stressed that the institutional framework, the government's legislative initiatives and the conjuncture of the exit of Greece from a long-standing crisis offer fertile ground for investment and new business ventures in the Greek economy.
