Iranian tanker Adrian Darya 1 has changed its destination and is now heading to Mersin, Turkey, according to specialized website MarineTraffic.com.
Adrian Darya 1 - formerly Grace 1 - departed Gibraltar on August 18 and had initially declared Kalamata a destination.
But now the Iranian super tanker, which is currently passing south of Sicily, has changed its destination to the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and now appears to be headed to Mersina.
However, as any destination can be entered into the AIS, it is not certain that Adrian Darya 1 will actually go to Turkey.
The Iranian tanker was arrested in July by the Gibraltar authorities on suspicion of carrying 2.1m barrels of oil to Syria in violation of European sanctions against the warring country.
The United States has issued a tank arrest warrant on the grounds that it has links to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, a select Iranian military body that Washington has designated as a terrorist organization, and have announced that they will take whatever action is necessary. so it does not deliver oil to Syria.
