The state will honor the memory of the late veteran politician Fofi Gennimata by giving her name to a cancer prevention program, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
Mitsotakis announced the start of the program on the day the Movement for Change (KINAL) party leader was buried. She died of cancer on Monday, World Breast Cancer Day. He said the program would begin with a pre-symptomatic check for cancer of the breast, the most common form of cancer threatening women, and the one cancer that can be healed if found early enough.
In 2022, a special pilot program will allow all women aged 50-69 to get free examinations for the illness. "Technology will help us inform women by email of their annual breast exam," the premier said, "while health clinics will be able to offer counseling so we may change dangerous habits and behaviors," he added.
The program, he said, "is an obligation of the state which is now even greater, as it will be accompanied by Fofi's strength and smile." It will be also accompanied by the message that "the efforts for a better public health must always unite us."
