"Grievous spiritual and moral slippage" is attributed by the Priestly Synod of the Church of Corfu to PASOK MP Dimitris Biagis and SYRIZA MP Alekos Avlonitis, regarding their support for the bill for same-sex couples.
The Priestly Synod of the Church of Corfu, in a statement it issued following a proposal by the Metropolitan of Corfu Nektarios, accuses the two opposition MPs, Alekos Avlonitis of SYRIZA and Dimitris Biagis of PASOK, of having "grievously erred spiritually" with their vote on the bill on marriage of same-sex couples and "cannot consider themselves as active members of the Church".
In fact, they announce that the two MPs will no longer be given honors deriving from the relationship between State and Church at official events, parish religious gatherings and litanies, while calling on them to "take up their responsibilities".
On the contrary, the announcement praises the attitude of government MP Stefanos Ghikas, stating that he "demonstrated the attitude of an Orthodox Christian and kept his conscience intact".
