Moralis presents ticket for Piraeus elections

Well known names rung out at Kaminia, Piraeus, at the official presentation of Yannis Moralis ticket for the municipality of Piraeus, including Olympiakos FC owner Vagelis Marinakis and industrialist Petros Kokkalis.

The name of the ticket is “Piraeus Victorious” (Pireas Nikitis), and it was officially launched at Kaminia in the presence of local voters, and notables, including former Olympiakos president Socrates Kokkalis and education minister Konstantinos Arvanitopoulos.

Mr Moralis noted that his ticket “express the new sweeping away the old,” and expounded on his vision of turning Piraeus into a global maritime center. The candidate mayor said he wanted a Piraeus that is “extroverted, with a dynamic economy, with prestige, and self confidence,” and not a Piraeus that will cheer for self-evident interventions, something he accuses incumbent mayor Vasilis Mihaloliakos of.

The prospective mayor stated that commercial marine activities, ferry services, marine tourism, commerce, naval training, and all shore based activities supporting maritime activities forge great bonds between Piraeus and the protagonists of international trade, stressing that the basic axes of his platform for growth and new job creation are rooted in the sea.

As an example of the power Piraeus could gain, Mr Moralis pointed to studies by the Boston Consulting Group that stress that the possible contribution of merchant marine activities could give the country's GDP an added value of 12.7 billion euros, per annum. According to the candidate these activities could add another half a million job positions, which, according to Mr Moralis could lower the country's unemployment by a third, and totally expunging unemployment from the country's main port.

“That is why Piraeus needs to look to the sea. That is why merchant marine sector and business leaders, like Vangelis Marinakis, have joined us. That is why Petros Kokkalis has joined us. That is why are asking many other competent citizens to join us,” he continued expounding on his vision to turn Piraeus into an international maritime center, similar to London and Singapore.

“We will realize everything we promise. We know how to win. Piraeus will emerge victorious,” said Mr Moralis
