Resignations, Inquests into Police Infiltration by Golden Dawn
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The resignations of the police general inspector of southern Greece, lieutenant general Ioannis Dikopoulos and the general police chief of Sterea Hellas major general Apostolos Kaskanis were accepted by public order ministry secretary general Athanasios Andreoulakis. The two high ranking police officers resigned for "personal reasons."
Furthermore, through a decision by the chief of police an inquest has been opened up into incidents that took place on 20 September outside the local Golden Dawn offices in Halkida, Evia, which lies a short distance from the police station. At that time members of the party carrying bats and other items that fall under the law for weapons were outside the party offices, but police did nothing, although they were obliged to do so, and did not inform headquarters.
Within the scope of the inquest it will be examined whether there were omissions during the search of Golden Offices for the collection of evidence and identification of persons using said objects (helmets, shields, clubs, etc).
Until the end of the inquest, the Evia police chief, the commander and the officer on duty of the police station, and the officer on guard duty at the time, have been put on temporary suspension.
Meanwhile, minister of public order Nikos Dendias has ordered an in-depth inquiry into the infiltration of police forces by Golden Dawn.
The inquiry will be carried by the bureau of internal affairs.
