Greece, Egypt, Cyprus Ministers Meet on EEZ Deliniation

The delineation of sea zones among Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt were at the focus of the meeting of the foreign ministers of the three countries, at the sidelines of the 68th General Assembly of the UN. The meeting took place at the offices of permanent representation of Egypt.

Greek foreign minister Evangelos Venizelos noted that the meeting was a continuation of the meeting held in Egypt during the visit he had along with his Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulidis, a few days ago.

Mr. Venizelos added that the meeting sent a message of resolve to promote the tripartite political collaboration organized along ministerial lines, but also on the level of ministry political directors.

"It is important to act in the region of interest to us, the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, as three countries interested in stability, peace, and development," he added.

As Mr. Venizelos noted, the Egyptian minister Nabil Fahmi briefed them on the situation in Egypt, adding that Greece in its guise as EU president for the first half of 2014 would inform the Union of Egyptian requests and needs.

The Greek minister also stated that the bilateral relations with Egypt should move forward in delineating maritime economic exploitation zones through the possibilities offered by the Law of the Sea in order to draw energy resources and offer developmental prospects for the countries' peoples.

Cypriot foreign minister Ioannis Kasoulidis noted that developments necessitated understanding, adding that the first tripartite meeting on a ministerial level, held after an Egyptian initiative, laid down the guidelines that will be taken over the ministries' political staffs.

Mr. Kasoulidis noted that certain circles, fueled by Turkey, had sought to undermine the legitimacy of talks with the present regime of Egypt, but this had been surpassed.
