A quadriplegic woman aged 56, died yesterday in Nea Chora in the area of Chania, on the island of Crete, because the Public Power Corporation cut the electricity to her house. The woman died one hour after the power cut, since she could not leave without mechanical support.
The woman's children have accused the State for negligence and said that the debt owned did not surpass 800 euros. They further stated they would file a suit against all responsible persons.
The Public Power Corporation revealed that the woman had never applied to be included in the vulnerable social group list, who have a preferential treatment in dealing with their debts towards the Public Power Corporation, since the owner of the electric power at her house was another person. As the Power Corporation said, there was no other way the company would know the specific case.
Syriza MP, Giorgos Stathakis said that he knew the case and had made an appeal to the PPC personally.
Moreover, a local newspaper of Chania published today a letter the woman had sent to the State a year ago, where she had stated her personal situation.
