Famous Greek Sports Journalist dies at 65

Translation By Lisa Darilis

The thrilling voice which echoed some of the most exciting moments of Greek basketball has been silenced forever. Filipos Sirigos, famous Greek journalist, has passed away at age 65.

Sirigos had an intense presence in the world of Greek sports on radio, newspapers, and television, with his noticeable presence, intricate knowledge, and great talent, not only in the game of basketball, but in his overall expressive sports commentaries. He was an example of, as a Greek expression says "He has no bones, but bones he breaks." His investigative and scandalous reporting almost cost him his life over ten years ago when he was attacked and beaten by unknown assailants.

Filipos Sirigos shall remain in sports history not only for his unforgettable coverage of the 1987 Eurobasket Finals, but overall for his hostile dispatches of every game he described.

Despite his impaired health condition the last two years, Sirigos has managed to stay at the forefront of the battle lines, but at the end succumbed to his dreadful illness.

What is certain is that Filipos Sirigos has left behind a great legacy, which has touched Greek sports journalism as a whole.
