Greece’s national water polo team won the bronze medal in the World Championship in Kazan, Russia, on Saturday by defeating Italy at the penalties with 11-9. This is the second time coach Thodoris Vlachou has sent the team on the winner’s podium, after winning third place in Montreal ten years ago.
With this win, Greece has secured a ticket to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos congratulated the team in a message on Sunday: “My warmest congratulations for your excellent effort and your overall presence, but also your great final success and distinction. This success is even more important considering you secured your participation in the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.”
