Eurobasket 2015: Greece – Latvia 97-90

Greece suffered a six-minute dry spell bridging the second and third frames and Latvia made the most of it as they used a blistering 24-0 run to turn a 37-28 deficit into a 52-37 lead with 8:06 remaining to play in the third stanza.

Yannis Bourousis finally stopped the rot with a lay-up on the fast break 7:25 from the third buzzer and Kostas Koufos, with a bank shot 8:41 from the end, capped a 28-9 sequence for Greece that gave them a 65-61 cushion.

The Greeks had only six assists in the first 23 minutes and hit three of their first 11 three-point attempts but their surge in the third frame was accompanied by a more patient search for the open look. They dished out 13 assists and went 7-of-10 from beyond the arc in the final 17 minutes of play. It is worth mentioning that each team turned the ball over on 16 occasions and the two sides combined for a massive 58 points off those turnovers (Latvia 32 points, Greece 26).

Yannis Bourousis was not always as efficient as he would have liked but ultimately made the difference as the man in the middle, especially after Kaspars Berzins fouled out for Latvia. The Greek center finished with 20 points, six rebounds, one steal, one block and drew seven fouls.

Greece have concluded their EuroBasket 2015 campaign in fifth place regardless of the result in the encounter between Italy and the Czech Republic as this was their seventh win in eight games in the tournament while both those teams are currently on a 4-3 record. Latvia can still qualify to the Olympic Qualifying Tournament provided they defeat the loser of the game between the Czechs and the Italians on Friday.
