Olympiakos - Panathinaikos 64-70

  • Written by

The first derby of the season came very early in Greece as toning the two European power houses played against each other in an amazing derby once more. The silent SEF (due to punishment of Olympiakos home court) was like a ghost as only the players and their coaches were in the court.

The first derby of Head Coach Djordjevic was totally successful as the Serbian Head Coach beat his opponent Sferopoulos at all edges of the court. Panathinaikos was much better and the victory was totally fair.It seems that the Greens are back to business after last season's break!

About the game now Olympiakos was abit better but both the teams were very nervous and they were not able to score with ease. Olympiakos lead the first period with 14-12 in a totally boring first period.
The same more or less was in the second period, both the teams obviosuly are not ready yet with players who were not so solid in their game and with many missing shots, the score at half time was the poor 26-26.

The tactics of Olympiakos was simply to block the player of Panathinaikos to remain in a very low game in scoring and that was something which was totally successful for Coach Sferopoulos as the third period both the teams ended to 18 all and the game after thirty minutes was in a total balance with both teams scoring 44-44

The fourth and most crucial period though, Djordjevic players were much better than their opponents and even if most of the newly arrived stars in both the teams remain in a very low level (Young 2 points, Raduljca 4 points, Milutinov 2 points, Gist 2 points, Hacket 4 points) the old members of both the teams were energized enough to keep up the scoring do from the one hand we had Printezis with Lojeski trying for their best while on the other hand Diamantidis and James Feldeine (193-G-88, college: Quinnipiac, agency: Excel Sports Mngm) were the leading figures of their teams.

The secret weapon of Panathianikos was the newcomer as James Fildane in his first derby in Greece proved to be present in the most difficult part of it and together with Jankovic (at his best ever performance in a derby against Olympiakos) were the top performers of the game especially in the last period were Djordjevic troops kept Olympiakos players for 3 minutes pointless with Jankovic scoring a three pointer for the 44-52 and right after another three pointer by Feldeine brought the score to +11 with the momentum changing totally in the empty SEF.
MVP of the game was the 3D - Dimitirs Diamantidis in another derby, the top Greek guard at his ends was once more the top man of the game and the top scorer with his 16 points he is proving once more how large he is in compare to other players of the (more or less) same caliber
