Attica Region to promote wedding tourism

Featured Attica Region to promote wedding tourism

Foreign nationals wishing to take their wedding vows in Attica could provide a significant source of income, executive regional counsillor of Attica Region Elena Demopoulos told the press on Wednesday.

Demopoulos stated that wedding tourism is part of the tourism products the region has chosen to develop and promote according to its strategic plan. She went on to explain that the region's presence in the Bridal Expo 2019 in Athens - aimed at showcasing Attica's wedding destinations and at boosting demand for this type of tourism in the national and international markets - was the first step in the process.

In the coming period, Dimopoulou continued, the Region intends to invite to Athens international wedding organisers in order to inform them of the advantages Athens has to offer to wedding travellers. These are:
- A unique cultural setting, offering a multitude of monuments and archeological sites
- Impressive photographic settings
- Hundreds of Byzantine-era chapels spread across Attica and the island, which lend themselves to hosting small-scale ceremonies
- The Saronic Gulf, with its romantic island settings that are also easy of access
- Greek mythology and its related body of texts, which can provide inspiration for various types of storytelling
- Internationally renowned fashion designers of clothes and jewelry, as well as photographers and industry specialists
- An abundance of hotels, catering facilities, reception spaces, and wineries that remain open to visitors throughout the year
- Event organisers and caterers specialising in high gastronomy

To date, most wedding tourists originate from Lebanon, with the exception of one notable Indian wedding estimated to have brought 500,000 euros in revenue for the local economy.
