Fire Aboard Russian Nuclear Sub

Fire broke out today aboard a Russian nuclear submarine undergoing repairs at a shipyard near Vladivostok, eastern Siberia.

Russian naval officers have said that there is no risk of an escape of radioactive materials, according to Russian news agencies.

The fire broke out aboard the Russian nuclear submarine Tomsk, while it was in drydock, at the Zvezda shipyards, at Bolshoi Kamen, about 25 kilometers from Vladivostok.

The nuclear reactor had been shut down prior to its positioning on the drydock, while all weaponry had also been removed and the crew was on land in other quarters, according to RTA news agency quoting an unnamed officer of Russia's Pacific Fleet.
