North & South Korea Missile Exchange

  • Written by

North Korea has enacted live-fire drills near the maritime border of South Korea, resulting in a fire exchange between the two territories.

It has been reported today, that the North started the eruptions after 12:00 p.m., with shots landing in the waters of South Korea. The three-hour drill contained approximately 500 artillery shells, with 100 landing in the Southern territory. South Korea then fired an estimated 300 artillery wheels back into the Northern territory's waters, with manned fighter jets around the Northern Limit Line.

One South Korean Ministry of Defense Official stated,"Some (North Korean) artillery fire landed in (the) southern part of Northern Limit Line but in the water...We counter-fired over the Northern Limit Line...We are not shooting at North Korea, just shooting into the sea".

Yesterday, North Korea claimed the nation "would note rule out" new nuclear tests, as it stood by its recent missile send offs that prompted international disapproval. Pyongyang's Foreign Ministry declared, ""(We) would not rule out a new form of a nuclear test aimed at strengthening our nuclear deterrence...The U.S. had better ponder over this and stop acting rashly." However, what specific type of new test was not revealed.

The United Nations Security Council condemned the activities and is pondering a suitable reaction. White House National Security Council Spokeswomen Caitlin Hayden agreed with the UNSC's stance, by describing North Korea's activities as "dangerous and provocative". She described, "Its continuous threats and provocations aggravate tensions and further its isolation. We remain steadfast in our commitment (to) the defense of our allies and remain in close coordination with both (South Korea) and Japan".
