Citizens complacent on state confiscations

Very few citizens have responded to a call by the Finance Ministry to designate a bank account where deposits up to 1,500 euros cannot be confiscated against arrears to the state.

Of the approximately 3.5 million taxpayers with some form of arrears, only 81,000 have done so since the process of designation began on July 29th.

According to the relevant provisions, pensions and welfare supplements are prioritized as sums that cannot be confiscated.

Taxpayers should access the Ministry’s Taxisnet service at www.gsis.gr, in the “Services to Citizens” category, and print a certificate which they then have to take to the bank.

All banks are expected to be integrated into the system within the next month. An application should then be made through Taxisnet, with the declaration of the designated bank account’s IBAN.

The Ministry will update the bank, which will check that the tax registration number corresponds with the IBAN and inform the taxpayer.
