Samaras Praises Church & Announces 281 Million Euro Aid Measure

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras spoke to the Greek Orthodox Church today during the "Solidarity, the Social Work of the Church and the Social Dimension of EU Policies," event.

He proclaimed his appreciation for its societal support during the financial crisis.  The Prime Minister discussed the goals of life improvement and economic reform, while praising the Church's role in aid. As reported by ANA, Samaras stated, "...now, that the most difficult part of the uphill struggle is behind us, I have to underline that the family, as an institution, and the Church have kept society on its feet during hard times".

In addition to constant relief efforts, the social dividend, homeless support, and Church activity, he also confirmed a 281 million euro food and special aid measure. The act was established by the Greek government and the European Parliament for 2014 to 2020. He commented that the implemented budget may surpass 350 million euros, while half of it will be handled by the Church of Greece.

Samaras stated, "There are no atheists in a war...we experience a war for the survival of our country and the signs show that it will be won". The Prime Minister added that mistakes have been made, but "...we are moving with steady steps looking toward the future".

The Prime Minister claimed, "The Church is the ark of love". The "Solidarity, the Social Work of the Church and the Social Dimension of EU Policies" was attended by Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece, Metropolitan Anthimos of Thessaloniki and Archbishop Anastasios of Albania.
