Gikas Hardouvelis Appointed New Finance Minister

Today, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has reshuffled his administration, and replaced Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras with Eurobank Chief Economist Gikas Hardouvelis.

Hardouvelis is also a finance and economics professor at the University of Piraeus-Greece. He was accepted by both governmental coalition bodies. Additional positions have been reportedly reassigned in the Ministers of Public Order, Interior, Education, Health and Culture. Outgoing Finance Minster Stournaras is predicted to govern the National Bank of Greece.

Previously, Hardouvelis served as the Economic Office Director under Lucas Papademos. He led the nation's private sector efforts in its initial bailout. The new Finance Minister has a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California and holds a B.A. degree in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University. In previous positions, he worked as an economist and adviser at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and as an advisor to the National Bank of Greece.
