Sunday Store Openings Met with Controversy
Sunday, Greek shops opened from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., which marks one of the seven Sundays this year that stores are required to hold business hours under a law passed last year.
The act was met by a 24-hour strike, according to ANA-MPA. Another test mandate calls for specified areas around the nation to open every Sunday, including major tourist locations and cities.
The Athens Commerce Association maintained its stance to open stores only seven Sunday out of 2014, while workers protested last Sunday over the year-round implementation.
As reported by the National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce President Vassilis Korkidis, there was not a substantial amount of shoppers or revenue gained by Sunday openings. The President claimed to ANA-MPA that certain required shops did not hold business hours on Sunday and should be addressed.
