The Council of Appeals Court Examines ELSTAT Chief

The Council of Appeals Court has decided to begin a new examination on ELSTAT chief Andreas Georgiou, over claims that he inflated Greek public deficit in 2009, in order to receive international aid, according to reports.

Georgiou is denouncing these claims and commented yesterday, that fiscal figures were altered before his position began with ELSTAT. Georgiou stated regarding the Court's judgment, "clear message that anyone who dares to enforce European regulations... will be dragged to court under the constant threat of having his personal freedom denied or facing unbearable financial consequences", as reported by Kathimerini.

Additionally, the ELSTAT head declared, "The ultimate goal is to push aside the political responsibilities for the model of governance that led the country to economic catastrophe and the poverty we are experiencing today".
