Noko the Knight's Culture of Compassion Campaign

Since the launch of her tale "Noko The Knight" / "Noko O Ippotis" last October, South African - Greek author, Eleni Theodorou has been captivating worldwide audiences of children, parents, and teachers with her multi-sensory adventure.

Ms. Theodorou has developed an enchanting program she came to call "Noko's Culture Of Compassion Campaign", which is taking U.S. Elementary schools by storm. It is through her African story that Ms. Theodorou creatively teaches children the deep value of compassion, forgiveness and cultural appreciation, where children are actively engaged from beginning to end, leaving the reading (session) enlightened and inspired – inspired to be a responsible, productive and caring person.

"Noko's Culture Of Compassion Campaign" is well-aligned with the anti-bullying programs schools are to updhold and is clearly making an wonderful impression on the young students who are fortunate to be part of this impactful program. Ms. Theodorou states "as cited by the American Society for the Positive Care of Children, current national (U.S.) statistics indicate that a staggering 20%-70% of kids have been bullied or have witnessed bullying, which is outrageous and needs to be quelled. Only 25% of the anti-bullying programs that are in place today prove to be successful. I have chosen to use my charming story about a porcupine to illustrate how deeply our words (whether spoken, written or texted) and our deeds affect another whether young or not; whether furry or not."

Through her program, and the use of authentic tools from South Africa such as porcupine quills, feathers and more, children are taught the art of compassion, helping them navigate their budding emotions, resulting in a more harmonious classroom. "A bully is more often than not a student that is unskilled in managing their emotions effectively and it is our duty as educators to help them rectify this. Afterall, children are most impressionable at a younger age and prevention is ultimately better than intervention" Ms. Theodorou emphasizes.

Ms. Theodorou is also actively engaged in local community events and delivers readings at libraries, children's hospitals, women's shelters and soon, Summer camps. She also is a very big supporter of the Bergen County Access for All movement in New Jersey, which is spearheaded by the Director of the Bergen County Division on Disabilities. Her tale was recently showcased at The South African State Theatre and is currently on tour in South Africa, by funding of the South African Department of Arts and Culture.
