"Aoratos" Performance Honors Manos Eleftheriou

Greek and international stars meet in New York on October 7, 2014, honoring Greek legendary poet Manos Eleftheriou.
New work from the poet entitled "Aoratos" ("invisible"), with music composed by Pericles Kanaris

New York – September 8th 2014. Accomplished international musicians from Greece and the US come together in New York for a one-night-only performance at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, on Tuesday, October 7, 2014. The occasion marks the CD release concert of "Aoratos," a new work showcasing poetry by Greek literary legend Manos Eleftheriou and music penned by composer Pericles Kanaris.

Greek vocalists Vasilis Papakonstantinou, Kostas Makedonas, Rita Antonopoulou, Lamprini Karakosta and cellist/Cretan lyra player Yiorgos Kaloudis join forces in the album with artists from all over the world, among them Grammy award winners Neil Dorfsman, John Benitez and Shane Shanahan. Armenian-American percussionist Ara Dinkjian, who has collaborated with Greek music stars including Lina Nikolakopoulou and Eleftheria Arvanitaki, is also featured playing the oud. Pericles Kanaris co-produced the album with Canadian NY-based producer/engineer Roman Klun. The album's artwork was created by internationally acclaimed artist Lydia Venieri.

Speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, Manos Eleftheriou said, "It is a great honor for me, as an old timer, to see my poetry being set to music by a much younger composer such as Pericles Kanaris."

Composer and performer Pericles Kanaris, who resides and creates in New York, underlined that "the coexistence of significant artists from all over the world with Greek culture as the focus, is a great opportunity to remind the international community of the country's resistance during a severe financial crisis that has hit its people over the past few years".

Vasilis Papakonstantinou who sings the album's title track "Aoratos" said, "I would like to thank Pericles Kanaris for presenting me with the opportunity to sing Manos Eleftheriou one more time and I look forward to seeing everyone there, at the Tribeca Performing Arts center on October 7."

Grammy Award winning producer/engineer Neil Dorfsman who mixed "Aoratos" said, "I was intrigued from the start; loving the idea of merging seemingly disparate elements into something new, emotional and relevant. The idea of taking this incredible poetry and framing it in a varied and contemporary setting really appealed to me. As I told Pericles, the more I worked on it the more I admired his spiritual vision."

The official presentation of the album and the concert will be held at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center in Manhattan, on October 7. The new songs will debut together with other classics composed by some of the most distinguished Greek composers including: Elias Andriopoulos, Stavros Kougioumtzis, Yannis Markopoulos, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Dimos Moutsis, Christos Nikolopoulos, Yannis Spanos, Mikis Theodorakis (in alphabetical order). Pericles Kanaris, was born in Athens, Greece. He studied music and philosophy in Europe and the United States earning multiple distinctions and awards. He has composed music for various international media. Among other distinguished credits, his composition "Project Innocence", originally developed for film, premiered at New York's Carnegie Hall in May 2007, performed by pianist Panos Karan. Greek music, however, has equally been a great source of passion and inspiration since the beginning of his career. In 1999, he formed the Contemporary Greek Music Ensemble which he successfully led at major concert venues in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is the composer and lyricist of the song "Stin Ygia Mas" which became the title theme for the most acclaimed Greek music television program, interpreted by prominent singers Manolis Mitsias and Dimitris Bassis. He is the producer of "Music of Greece", the first compilation of Greek music ever released by New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, in conjunction with the reopening of its world-renowned Greek and Roman galleries in April 2007. In 2008 he formed Synolon, a New York-based ensemble which consistently sold out the world music venue DROM in the East Village for 6 consecutive seasons and garnered rave reviews for changing the presentation of Greek music in the city. He lives and works in New York.
