"Heaven & Earth: Art of Byzantium from Greek Collections" Exhibit, Los Angeles

The Getty Villa will offer the exhibit: "Heaven and Earth: Art of Byzantium From Greek Collections" in Los Angeles, CA.

The presentation will be on view between April 9th to August 25th, 2014. Its theme focuses on artists who constructed designs from early Christian foundations and pagans, to create the extremely spiritual and lavish creations of the Byzantium era. The Byzantine period dates from A.D. 330 to 1453. Christianity established as the state religion influenced the production of beautifully detailed icons, architectural sculptures, textiles, frescoes, mosaics and more.

The exhibition will offer almost two hundred exclusively Greek pieces. It will reveal the specific Byzantine artistic style, whose influence permeated neighboring cultures for over 1,000 years. The viewing is organized by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, Athens in collaboration with the Benaki Museum, Athens, and in association with the J. Paul Getty Museum and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

"Heaven and Earth: Art of Byzantium From Greek Collections" is sustained by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and Humanities. Its American visit was made possible by OPAP S.A. major funding; financial assistance was also granted by the A.G. Leventis Foundation.
