Double tornado strikes Mount Athos

A double tornado struck the Mount Athos monastic community on Sunday, east of Megistis Lavras Monastery, frightening monks that fled to the chapel to pray. Brother Theologos remained behind to immortalize the phenomenon on camera.

Before the first tornado could subside, a second one broke out west of the first, raising huge amounts of water.  Scientists assure that this a common phenomenon, in northern Greece in the summer, and counsel that there is nothing to fear especially if they appear so far from shore.

In fact such phenomena are more common in Greece than in other European countries, with an average of around forty tornadoes a year, mostly in northern Greece or off of the western Peloponnese.  Over the last few days 12 such tornadoes broke out in Greece.
