Daring helo extraction of pregnant refugee

The Greek Ministry of Defense has released a video of an operation to airlift a pregnant woman off the broken down cargo ship that was transporting hundreds of irregular immigrants to Italy.

The ship, called the Baris, had broken down off the coast of Crete. In an operation made difficult by gale force winds and large waves, the Hellenic Navy managed to attach a line to the ship and tow it to port in Ierapetra Crete.

During the towing operation a pregnant woman suffering difficulties was airlifted off the ship in a daring rescue operation. In the video two rescuers descend from the helicopter to the ship as it is being towed and place the woman on a stretcher which is subsequently winched into the helicopter.

The woman was subsequently transferred to a hospital in Irakleio in Crete for treatment.
