ANEL: patriotic safety valve

The gap between New Democracy and main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) in the polls in too wide to be reversed which means the election campaign has essentially ended, the president of Independent Greeks (ANEL) Panos Kammenos said in a speech in the town of Volos in central Greece on Monday.

"The election campaign is over, the gap between SYRIZA and New Democracy is 8 pct, there’s no way to reverse it. I call on all those who are afraid and mainly those in the centre and I tell them there are two solutions: Either SYRIZA wins with a majority and has all the arrogance of power, or you support Independent Greeks who constitute a patriotic safety valve for the red lines which relate to national issues, Orthodoxy and the diaspora," Kammenos said in his address.

He said his party wants to send a message that they want to unite Greeks and negotiate for Greece. "The theories of the extremes have cost us dearly in the past and now we have to stick to what unite us."
Commenting on a possible coalition with SYRIZA’s leader Alexis Tsipras, he said: "I will keep an eye on Tsipras and if I see that he tries to make a deal and wants to hide the truth from the Greek people I will overthrow the government."

Kammenos said there’s no issue of fear and noted that the only terrorism comes from Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble.
