Well-Heeled Foreign Beggars

Thousands of euros were found on two foreign nationals begging near central Syntagma square when they were taken into custody by police.
According to an announcement by ELAS (Greek police), traffic police found a 63 year old Bulgarian national begging at the corner of Marasli Street and Vasilisis Sofias Avenue, who after a search was found with 1,710 euros in cash.
In a second incident, a 61 year old Turkish national was found begging at the entrance of the Syntagma metro station, who proved to have on his person 4,775 euros and 9 US dollars.
The money was confiscated and placed in the state fund, while authorities formed charges for solicitation against the two.
