Idomeni camp evacuation operation

Greek authorities have begun an operation to evacuate the country’s largest refugee camp of Idomeni.

The operation began at dawn and journalists were barred from the area. Government and police officials have said the people in Idomeni will be moved gradually to newly completed, organised camps. The operation will conclude at a week’s time. For the time being approximately 340 refugees have been transferred by bus to camps near Thessaloniki.
About 20 riot police units, comprising a total of about 400 police, were in Idomeni for the operation. Some tension is reported at this hour. So far three activists were detained when police found pamphlets in Arabic urging refugees to remain in the area, as borders would open.
