Asylum hearings of 8 turkish officers to start Aug. 19

Greece’s asylum service Wednesday postponed the hearings of the eight Turkish military officers who sought shelter in Greece after participating in the coup attempt in their country, according to Greek officials.
“The interviews were postponed with the first due to start on August 19, in order to give them time to prepare their asylum case,” a senior Greek official said.
Two of them appeared at the Central Asylum Service in Athens and requested extra time. The interview process is expected to last a week.
The officers landed in a helicopter in the northern city of Alexandroupolis, close to the Turkish border, on July 16, a day after the failed coup attempt. They were immediately arrested by Greek police and subsequently pleaded political asylum.
Turkey’s government has requested the rapid extradition of the men it has described as “traitors” to face charges of trying to overthrow the democratic constitution.
