FYROM PM: agreement with Greece by July

FYROM Prime Minister, Zoran Zaev foresees an agreement on the name of his country with Greece by the summer.

Making statements to Austrian radio ORF, the Skopje prime minister expressed confidence that the two countries will have successfully completed the negotiations by the NATO summit in July.

"I believe we will be able to successfully conclude the negotiations by the NATO summit in July," he said, expressing the expectation that his country's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty pact will then advance.

"We have an open invitation from NATO to begin the accession process as soon as possible after we have settled with Greece," he added.

As Reuters conveys, talks with Greece over the name of FYROM begun in 1991, when the state of FYROM was removed from the former Yugoslavia. The name 'Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia' (FYROM) was given by the United Nations in 1993 as a temporary solution and its definitive settlement is pending.

In recent months, following the FYROM's eagerness to become the newest member of NATO and then of the European Union, the foreign ministers of the two countries, mediated by UN special envoy Matthew Nimetz, are in "heated" consultations, amid reactions from both sides.

The NATO summit is scheduled for 11 and 12 July in Brussels.
